After leading Sunday School classes, for most of my adult life, I became responsible for developing our new small group ministry in a mega-church in the West (our senior pastor was friends with the pastor of the largest church in the world which had thousands of community groups, so we learned from them). We divided the front range of the Rockies into 500 small group communities, with small group leaders over each. We then divided the groups under 5 small group regional staff pastors. They met in homes, work places, restaurants, or the church facilities, every day of the week, including some of the traditional Sunday morning time/spaces. Fellowship/relationships was the core purpose…as we grew deeper in our relationship with God and each other. Plus, these groups became the legs and arms of Christ in ministering to their communities. This Denver experience prepared me for spending the next 20 years alongside national ministry and denominational leaders to help them become more effective as they worked through local churches. This also led Jan and I to become involved in marriage ministry, both at the local church level (we have led marriage classes for about 1800 in the Nashville area-cross denominationally), to ministry couple retreats nationally, and through the leadership for family ministry. After coming to Grace Chapel in January, 2015, we have been greatly blessed as members of a life group and as leaders of the Life-After-55 group that we started. I don’t know of a more effective way to experience what God is doing at Grace Chapel! We are on the brink of a mighty spiritual awakening and Grace Chapel is prepared to lead the way…especially through our Life Groups!!
